A Single Seat Race Boat crafted in beautiful varnished wood with delightfully detailed cockpit

This stunning model of a 1950's Thunderbolt - Hydrofoil with its wooden cedar hull, polished and varnished to a mirror finish, is over 31 inches long (80cm), it has a fully detailed cockpit and faux leather drivers seat. The big throaty engine exhausts exit through the Cowling on both sides and run up the side of the beautiful maroon red, painted upper body.

The steering rudder and propeller shaft are shiny silver chrome whilst fittings to the polished wood base mount are silver. The model oozes quality with its warm, deep red colouring, striking body lines and fantastic its amazing attention to detail…. An exquisite centrepiece in any situation.

In the day, Hydrofoils were often built by amateur hobbyists who would use the lightest and easiest materials that they could acquire at the time, most having varnished decks with stepped hulls, helping air travel under the boat which caused it to ride on the mixture of bubbles and water, ultimately given it less drag and more speed. Essentially these boats would fly through the air over the surface, rather than through the water.

Seven water speed records were retained by Donald Campbell in the period between 1955 and 1964, these all being achieved with jet engined hydroplanes and at the time of writing, the fastest record for a hydrofoil is 318 mph and was achieved at the Blowering Dam in Australia.
